1 Introduction
Once the event has been set up, the checkpoint information can be shared with the participant and that provides them with the crucial information of:
- How far to the next checkpoint?,
- When will I reach it?,
- What facilities does it have? and
- If there is a cut-off, how much time to I have before the cut-off is reached?
2 Garmin DataField Settings
With the DataField installed on the device and is a screen on the activity (such as Cycling), the DataField can display, for the next checkpoint, the:
- Distance (Note this is straight-line distance),
- Estimated time,
- Facilities available and any notes made and
- Duration until the cut-off, or the next checkpoint/finish that has a cut-off.
Once checkpoint information has been sent to the Garmin device, the DataField operates and calculates times and distances independently of the App.
Each of these Infopoints can be configured using the Connect IQ (CIQ) App.
Extra Lines. Shown below the distance to the Next Checkpoint, if the data field is tall enough. A small field fits fewer, and they are added in this order:
- Show ETA: Displays the Estimated Time of Arrival. Calculated by a weighted algorithm of previous pace/speed and current pace/speed
- Show Cut-off time: Displays the time left to reach the next checkpoint that has a hard cut-off, when the event sets one.
- Show Facilities: Displays what will be at the next checkpoint — water, food, toilets, bag drop, etc
- Show Notes: Displays any additional notes, shortened to fit the field
Arrival Radius (m): How close to a checkpoint to count as reached and the field to move on to the next one. 10m – 1km, default 50m. Note: Cycling or fast moving activities need a larger proximity.
Cut-off Warning (mins): In minutes, when do you want the warning (if displayed) to turn Red. 0 – 600 mins, default 60 mins, 0 don’t turn red.
Arrival message (secs): How long “Arrived” shows; Seconds the “Arrived” banner is held after reaching a checkpoint before the display moves on to the next. 0 – 60 secs, default 10 secs, 0 disables the banner.
Vibrate on Arrival: Switch on to make the device pulse/vibrate per checkpoint.
Forget event after (days): How long after an event finishes the watch keeps its checkpoints, so an old event does not linger for good. Set to 0 to keep every event until you replace it. Default is 7 days after the event
Start event again: Switch on to go back to the first checkpoint, keeping the event itself. Use it to ride an event a second time, or if the field is a checkpoint ahead of you. It switches itself back off. Your progress is kept between rides otherwise, so a watch restarted mid-event carries on where it was. back to checkpoint 1, then switches off.
Clear stored event: Switch on to make the watch forget the event it is holding. It clears the checkpoints and your progress, then switches itself back off. Sending the event again reloads it.
